Big Sean Appointed Creative Director of Global Experience for Detroit Pistons
Big Sean is stepping into a major leadership role with the Detroit Pistons, becoming the franchise’s new Creative Director of Global Experience. The move strengthens Detroit’s global brand while putting culture, creativity, and community at the forefront.
Big Sean is officially taking on an expanded and influential role within the Detroit Pistons organization. According to Complex, the Detroit-born rapper has been named the team’s Creative Director of Global Experience, a position centered on shaping the franchise’s visual identity, creative voice, and long-term cultural strategy. At 37 years old, Sean will focus on global fan development, community engagement, and cultural storytelling, aligning with the NBA’s broader mission to grow the game internationally. His role will help define how the Pistons present themselves to fans around the world, blending basketball, culture, and creativity into a unified global brand. The Pistons have already taken steps toward international expansion this season, including their appearance in Mexico City last November against the Dallas Mavericks — the NBA’s 34th regular-season game played in the country. Big Sean’s appointment builds on that momentum. As part of his new role, Sean will support the Pistons’ “Creatives Across Continents” initiative. The program invites designers, artists, and cultural tastemakers from around the world to create work inspired by Detroit basketball. A collaborative retail collection stemming from the project is planned for release in 2026, further expanding the team’s cultural footprint. Sean expressed his excitement in a post on Instagram, reflecting on his long-standing relationship with the franchise. He highlighted past achievements such as winning an Emmy together, designing City Edition jerseys worn in games, creating exclusive merchandise, and connecting local Detroit creatives with the organization. Stepping into a front-office role with one of the NBA’s most historic franchises, he said, is deeply meaningful. In a separate statement, Big Sean emphasized his commitment to Detroit’s creative community, noting that the city has always been rich with talent and culture. His mission, he explained, is to continue opening doors for Detroit-based creatives and helping them shine alongside one of the most iconic teams in sports. This isn’t Sean’s first time working with the Pistons. Earlier in the decade, he joined the organization as Creative Director of Innovation, where he played a key role in designing special-edition jerseys, developing a partnership with StockX, and launching unique fan-focused experiences. The announcement was made on December 21 — World Basketball Day, adding symbolic weight to the news. The timing couldn’t be better for the Pistons. Detroit is currently enjoying a breakout season, sitting atop the Eastern Conference with a 22–6 record, nearly halfway to last season’s total of 48 wins. Cade Cunningham’s superstar leap and Jalen Duren’s dominance in the paint have fueled the team’s rise. Cunningham is averaging 27 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 9.2 assists per game, while adding nearly 1.5 steals and close to a block per night. Duren has emerged as a consistent force, posting 18 points and 11 rebounds per game and solidifying himself as a nightly double-double threat. With Big Sean now helping shape the Pistons’ global image and cultural direction, Detroit basketball is thriving both on and off the court.
